We would have hoped that Arnold Schwarzenegger's big screen
return would have been met with great enthusiasm and anticipation, but the
weekend box office figures for his latest movie paint a different picture. It grossed
just $6.3mn over the weekend and took 9th place.
Those who watched the trailer wouldn’t be surprised. Arnold was
nowhere close to exhibiting his on-screen dominance in his earlier movies, such
as the likes of Terminator and Predator. Who can blame him? That was decades ago.
A distinctive shot of him holding a shot gun in the trailer was enough to
inform me that this performance was not going to be what it should. He looked awkward.
Wobbly.
Let’s hope that it was just the jitters over a prolonged
absence and that he’ll do better next time around with The Tomb, where Schwarzenegger
and Sylvester Stallone will be teaming up yet again. That should be a pleasing
move for their hardcore fans. Yet this time around, The Last Stand fell prey to
Jessica Chastain’s Mama which took 1st place, probably riding off her
awards season buzz. Terminated indeed.
I guess he forgot what movie violence was like after all this time. He'll get used to it. |
