Star Wars Episodes 7-9: Best way to go?
Following Disney's
acquisition of Lucasfilm, came the news that a new sequel trilogy for Star Wars
is under way. What is going to happen? Will it feature Luke Skywalker, Han Solo
and Princess Leia? Will they be old enough to be our grandparents or will the
movies follow right off A New Hope? What
will have happened to the Jedi? At the end of A New Hope, it was apparent that
Luke was one of the last remaining Jedi.
Yet, we were all made
to believe that A New Hope was the end according to how the story ended. It
marked the end of the Dark Side and the prophecy regarding The Chosen One was
fulfilled, applying the plot of the prequel trilogies. Will another trilogy
upset this story arc? Fans were already bitter over the prequel trilogy and the
changes made to the Blu-ray edition of the franchise. Putting all that aside, I
would have envisioned a different 3 part saga for the Star Wars universe.
Talk about the
revival of the franchise had me curious about the origins of the Sith and the
Dark Side, about how they came up. This seems ideal for me as I haven't read the books about the expanded universe. It will be fascinating to know the roots of every little detail, from the Sith themselves to the red light saber. I believe this would have been a more
appropriate basis for a new collection of movies as it doesn’t sabotage the
story or the conclusions of the other movies. This would also satisfy most of
the Star Wars zealots who were unhappy about the recent discussions, thinking
that the move was an attempt to bury the franchise six feet under.
Yet, despite such skepticism, the movies should be in good
hands as Michael Arndt will be writing the screenplay for the movie. His
accolades include an Academy Award, so his standards are clearly superior to
most Hollywood screenwriters. It will be disappointing to see George Lucas
absent at the helm this time around but, chances are that the next three movies
will indeed be a New Hope for the franchise.
Is this a sign of things to come? |

ReplyDeleteYou know Sankha, the Star Wars mythos leaves a lot of plots to be followed. In games and books these have already been done, and some of them are actually great. If Disney makes it more accessible to children, then,in my opinion - that's a good thing.
