Hansel and Gretel is a Genre Bending Movie
Hansel and Gretel stars Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arteton as the titular characters of the movie. At first sight, it seems to have a good plot twist which extends the classic tale rather convincingly, where the siblings exact revenge on all witches they stumble upon following their traumatizing childhood experience.
After watching the trailer, though, my opinion changed for the worse. I couldn't comprehend the genre this movie belonged to. Is it a Sci-Fi mash up, a comedy or a medieval classic? Because the last time I checked, bazookas, grenade launchers and gatling guns weren't available in the 14th or 15th century. In addition, I don't expect rustic folk centuries ago to coin the term "Hell Yeah". That happens to be a colloquial term of the 2000s.
Yet, for all of this criticism, the film grabbed US$19mn at the weekend US box office against the likes of Mama, Silver Linings Playbook and Zero Dark Thirty. Clearly, movie-goers relished the opportunity to see heaps of blood and gore over movies with sentimental value. If that's what you're after, I guess this Hansel and Gretel movie should be the ideal visit to the cinema.
It might be a traditional weapon shooting cross bolts. |
Okay, now this is ridiculous. |
