Must Zack Snyder Tamper with Batman?
Zack Snyder has been berated for his widespread use of CGI in
Man of Steel, especially when it comes to the final scenes of the movie. While I
applaud most of the special effects, there were some instances where the
material felt generic. I wasn’t impressed with the
mechanical hydra at the end but that was the only fault that really stood out. Others, though, have gone on to pan the wreckage that was Metropolis and the death toll, opting to ignore that even Marvel’s portfolio of films had its fair share of that.

The use of technology is a trademark of Snyder’s. Man of
Steel, Sucker Punch, Legend of the Guardians, Watchmen and 300 are evidence of
his tech-savvy bearing. A Superman movie has an extraterrestrial nature to it
so alien science does come to play. This should give Snyder the license to
exercise his technical wisdom in Man of Steel but with all the criticism, we
must ask if he is the right person to helm the Batman/Superman sequel.
The planned sequel should focus more on the 2 superhero
characters and reach unseen emotional depths. Unfortunately, CGI can’t create
this. I must say, however, that Snyder provided some extremely powerful images
in the Man of Steel. The destruction of Krypton, the death of Jonathan Kent and
Superman’s first flight stoke an assortment of feelings. Watchmen, too, showed
that he is capable of doing more than blowing up the civilized world. Calling
him another Michael Bay then is quite harsh, at least to me.
This is my take on it. Others compare his emotional
statements to melodrama and cheesy homilies. This is probably due to them being
oblivious to the source material. Do you really think critics read comic books?
Most don’t want him to meddle around with Batman, particularly because it was
only last year that Christopher Nolan’s epic saga was concluded. They don’t want
him meddling with anymore DC characters.
I disagree. The DC universe in cinema is set to expand. There
will be a tremendous amount of science fiction and technology to deal with so
Snyder is apt in handling such affairs. I also believe that he can provide
visceral and emotional scenes as he has shown with Man of Steel and Watchmen. Furthermore,
changing the director for the sequel will be unwise as it can result in tonal inconsistencies.
Another director would have a different vision for the DC universe and this can
undo the work Snyder has established. Also, getting another director to
recreate a Snyder-like feeling with more emotional heft will be an arduous task.
Directors don’t handle cinematography according to a universal standard. This makes
one fact certain, Snyder should direct the sequel.
