Over-Crowded Movie Calendar
2015 is being proclaimed as the greatest year for movies. One
look at the line up on the calendar will help you realize why. Despite Avatar 2
being postponed to 2016, 2015 will
still headline with Avengers 2, the
Batman/Superman movie, Star Wars Episode VII and Jurassic Park IV. It is
perhaps going to be a monumental year but it does raise one question. Is 2015 also
going to be the year with the most number of box office flops?
Every month is going to be crowded with movie entries and
more often than not, the blockbusters will be concentrated in the summer months
and feasibly in December. There could be a scenario where Avengers 2 opens on
the same weekend that Batman/Superman does. Star Wars Episode VII may premiere
alongside Jurassic Park IV. When such a showdown occurs, which movie is likely
to take a massive fall at the box office? A clear face off at present is Bond
24 and Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2. It might be easy to pick a winner if
Avengers 2 picks a fight with a newcomer, but Bond and Hunger Games are two
established franchises, where a winner will be difficult to judge. This makes
2015 a year where most films would fail to draw audiences.
A second scenario is also likely, though. Seeing the amount
of excellent movies screening throughout the year, cinema attendance could
increase dramatically. Families may opt to go to the movies every weekend or
twice a week to catch every noteworthy release. 2 years from now, the global
economy could be in better shape with rising incomes and employment so spending
on leisure services should elevate, too.
However, this is a less plausible outcome as visiting the cinema twice a
week or so is uncharacteristic of some people and we know that habits are hard
to change. Besides, politicians aren’t too
keen on fixing the problems they created.
Then, it would seem that most films in 2015 are slated for
inappreciable ticket sales while others fly sky high. Take a look at the movie
calendar for 2015. Only the important features are displayed.
