Chucky Back After 9 years
After an almost decade-long absence, the world’s favorite
doll (for adults that is) is back on camera. This time round, Chucky has had
quite a radical makeover. His iconic red hair is combed more thoroughly and his
hillbilly overalls seem
like they were laundered at a very chic service.
Looking closer at the trailer early on, though, it becomes evident that Chucky’s
trademark devious smile has been displaced by a more innocent-looking and
child-friendly do-over. Of course, he
then decides to turn up the hysteria and lo and behold, Chucky is back in full
force.
Originally, the Child’s Play franchise was established in
1988 with sequels in 1990 and 1991. The premise of the film is that a doll
(Chucky) is possessed by the spirit of a serial killer and eagerly wishes to
transfer this demonic presence on to a human. Usually, the human would be the
protagonist of the movie who early on was a boy by the name of Andy Barclay. The
first three installments had the sole purpose of creating an aura of horror
around the concept, despite what it entailed.
Later on though, with ‘Bride of Chucky’ (1998) and ‘Seed of
Chucky’ (2004) the Child’s Play Empire took a detour into the comedy
genre. It’s not surprising given that in
the last entry, Chucky’s son is called Shitface. The plunge into the comedy
field is further validated when Chucky and his wife Tiffany argue about the
gender of their child, a highly appropriate argument given that dolls aren’t manufactured
with genitalia of any sort.
The upcoming entry ‘Curse of Chucky’ is to be released
direct to DVD, so the early word is that it will be a B-movie at the best,
incapable of generating appropriate box office earnings. The movie is to act as
an official reboot and rebrand the movie as a horror flick, but one glance at
the trailer and you’ll realize how debatable that task is. Perhaps children
under the age of ten will find this movie extraordinarily terrifying, seeing
their cuddle toy undertake a sordid transformation but for teenagers and
adults, this will still be a laughter-inducing picture. It doesn’t matter if its
horror or comedy, what matters is that after 9 years, Chucky is finally back.
