'Boxtrolls' Teaser Trailer is Gay-Friendly
Stop-motion animation studio Laika has taken a rather
revolutionary approach in animated cinema by including a same-sex couple in
their next movie 'Boxtrolls'. The trailer’s main point is that families come in all shapes and sizes. We see a kid being raised by two fathers, two mothers and eventually by a group of monsters in crates (probably the titular Boxtrolls).

This isn’t the first time that Laika Studios has taken such
a liberal approach. In 2012’s ParaNorman, Mitch, a buff jock is revealed to be
gay when a girl asks him out to a movie. Mitch replies by saying "That
sounds great, Cathy. You’re gonna love my boyfriend. He's, like, a total
chick-flick nut!"
This time around, Boxtrolls will see a kid being fostered by
a collection of sewer monsters. He must then save his disparate family from the
hands of an exterminator. While Hollywood and the media herald the trailer as “groundbreaking”,
it must be stated that the entire movie may not feature a same-sex couple. The movie is based on the novel “Here Be
Monsters!” by Alan Snow and it is set in the early 19th century,
when I doubt that a gay or lesbian couple was a fact to celebrate. Hence, it
may seem that this so-called “groundbreaking” nature is limited to the teaser
trailer.
Of course, when books are transformed into movies, there are
numerous alterations to the characters and plot, and it is yet to be seen if
Laika will create drastic distortions to the book’s story. To me though, a
revolutionary change would be when an animated movie for kids is centered
entirely on a same-sex couple and not just in a trailer. That may take a while,
though.
