This month, Carrie will hit theaters on the 18th,
a horror movie based on the 1974 Stephen King novel. Since the publishing of
the book, there have been 2 other film adaptations and this will be the 3rd
reiteration, with a more modern twist perhaps. The film will star Chloƫ Grace
Moretz as
the titular character, who happens to possess telekinetic powers, the
ability to move and deform objects as defined by the dictionary.
Movies normally rely on trailers, billboards and TV spots to
advertise movies but this may be the first time where an immersive, interactive
experience has been utilized to draw forth the masses. A camera prank
engineered by Sony sees an actress use her telekinetic powers in a coffee
house, much like Carrie does in the movie. The video has already gathered 9.7
million views so there definitely is some buzz surrounding the movie. While the
prank is definitely worth watching, will this buzz feed into stronger box
office earnings, though? With movies such as The Fifth Estate and 12 Years a
Slave opening in the same week, there will be some strong competition,
especially from the latter which is already hailed as an Oscar contender. Then
there’s the strong pull of ‘Gravity’ which earned $55.8 million last weekend. It’s
unsure if this prank will translate to a larger audience given the stiff
competition already present (Gravity) and sure to come (12 Years a Slave). That
is unless the month of Halloween gets people into the horror spirit.
