Should the Evil Dead be Remade?

Evil Dead Remake to be Released in April

This is the eternal dilemma. Should a remake be made? Look back over the years and you will see that most remakes have stumbled and crashed upon flight. One such entry was 2010’s Clash of the Titans, which tried to reenact the 1981 classic unsuccessfully.

This time, Sam Raimi’s 1981 cult-horror hit is being resurrected by Fede Alvarez. For those unfamiliar with the story, it’s basically a group of friends who travel off to a remote cabin in the woods (sounds familiar… maybe because Chris Hemsworth starred in a similar movie in 2011) and discover a book that has the power of summoning demons who have been taking a peaceful break form torturing others. These plot points have been revisited in horror films across decades, but for those in 1981, this was all new and refreshing, so leave the sighs of judgement for later.

As of now, though, I, too, think that the movie would head towards a formulaic story which is expected of a remake. Besides, the previous paragraph and the summary also point towards this. Yet, it’s a different director taking control of the film who has to have a different vision. This doesn’t mean that the movie will be buried six feet under. Fede Alvarez was handpicked by Sam Raimi himself, so clearly they believe he is the man of the hour.  I don’t know how different the remake will be from the original or if it will do justice in the end, but I can promise lots of blood.

I didn't know this was a remake of The Exorcist.
I did say lots of blood. Demons make menstruation messy.

Take a look at the trailer. Mature audiences only.
