Ant-Man Movie Rumored for 2015 Release With Edgar Wright at The Helm
By Guest Blogger Marvel-ous
It was last summer that Edgar Wright showcased some test
footage from Ant-Man, the movie planned to kick of Phase Three of the Marvel
Cinematic Universe. Since then the footage was kept safely away from fan boy
hands. Well, thanks to some sneaky phone camera work at an event in London, the
footage found its way online yesterday until it was taken down by the internet’s
lawmakers.
One of the founding
members of the Avengers initiative in the comic books, Ant Man is the
superhuman alias of Bio scientist Dr. Henry 'Hank' Pym. Pym discovers a
substance that allows him to shrink to the size of an ant and calls it
"Pym Particles". Using this to his advantage Pym fights crime
alongside his superhero girlfriend, The Wasp, also a founding member of Avengers
and the favorite to takeover after Black Widow as the female Avenger in the
Marvel Films. Pym later discovers a way to make himself larger and goes under a
new identity Goliath, but his Ant Man powers are used by another
criminal-turned-good guy Scott Lang. Never mind that, that's comic book story-line stuff.
The idea of introducing Ant Man to the series was not one
that I was very interested in, despite the fact that it would be directed by
Edgar Wright of "Shaun of the Dead" and "Scott Pilgrim"
fame, who is yet to put a foot wrong and doesn't seem like he would any time
soon, with the Simon Pegg collaboration for Sci-Fi Comedy "The World’s End".
The leaked footage has done nothing to change my mind.
The short action sequence opens with Ant Man, dressed in his
ridiculous helmet and red suit, emerging from an elevator and walking into a
corridor guarded by two men. What follows is probably one of the most confusing
fight scenes I have witnessed, ranking alongside the likes of Sly Stallone's
Expendables 2 climax melee. Ant Man takes down the two guards with his superman
strength in Ant form while rapidly shifting back into Human size continuously.
The scene also includes a downright cartoonish moment where ant man runs down
the barrel of the gun of one of the guards before taking him out with his tiny
fists.
With the release date set in 2015, this clip is a show of
how an Ant Man movie is practical and could be successful. Kudos to Marvel for
mixing it up in their superhero universe, without sticking to the usual formula
of using veteran superheroes. The upcoming project Guardians of the Galaxy and
Ant Man show this ethos Marvel are following, to the utmost delight of Comic
book Avengers purists.
The make-or-break for this Ant Man movie would definitely be
the casting and the way they handle the extremely confusing fight scenes.
Wright and Marvel are going to have a tough time selecting an actor to play the
part of Hank Pym and his insect persona.
I’ll leave you with some of my favorite suggestions:
1) Nick Cage - Everyone's favorite Ghost Rider and Hollywood
Chameleon has expressed interest in doing another superhero movie, Ant Man?
More likely to be Dr. Strange I guess.
2) Jake Gyllenhaal - Almost became Batman back when Nolan
was setting up his epic Trilogy, will the "Donnie Darko" superstar be
willing to revisit his dark and strange side with a portrayal of Dr. Henry Pym?
3) Adrien Brody - Already has the physical makings of a
near-out-of-mind scientist, could this man be a suitable candidate to don the
Ant helmet.
4) Robert Pattinson - nah I'm just kidding, please don't
even think about it.
5) Leonardo DiCaprio - I mean come on, who doesn't want to
see Leo play a superhero? See, no one.
So is he Magneto with an ant fetish? |
Never-before seen footage. Must watch.
