Jack Reacher: Does appearance matter?

Jack Reacher is a fictional character in Lee Child's most renown series of novels. He is described as being 6'5", with a 50 inch chest and weighing between 210 and 250 pounds. He also has dirty blonde hair.

So when Tom Cruise was cast as the former military police corps major there would have been massive public disapproval from the fans of the series, which was the case. He stands at an unimpressive 5'7" and has nothing even close to resembling dirty blonde hair.

Yet, as I was watching the movie I felt like he owned the role (I haven't read the books). He captures that nonchalant, calm personality that is portrayed in the novels. His delivery of humor is even more commendable. The crowd at the cinema hall was laughing at precisely the right moment for the right reason. The action sequences involving the car chase and the quarry battle were also crafted out perfectly by an actor who turned 50 last year.

If people watch this movie with an open mind, they will find it to be quite enjoyable. While this may be Mission Impossible for fans of the books, it should be a simpler task for the average theatre goer. In my mind though, Tom Cruise manages to overcome his shortcomings, pun intended.
